July 29, 1938 - Oct. 9, 2019
Tom passed away suddenly at his home after a long illness. He is survived by Judy, his wife and partner of 47 years, their daughter Vicki (Nathan Taylor), his daughter Tracy McBee (Charles), his grandsons Dean, Riley and David and his great-grandson Otto. He is also survived by his siblings Barb McGruder and Bob Williams and numerous nieces, nephews and friends across the country. He was predeceased by his son Carl, brother Doug and sister Joan.
Tom was always the life of the party, quick witted and with a never-ending supply of jokes, and on occasion he would break out in song, 'In the Still of the Night' being his go to song. He was affable to a fault and his favorite saying was ‘a stranger is only a friend I haven’t met yet’.
Tom was born and grew up in Toronto, enlisted in the army in 1956 where he blew out his knee and received a medical discharge in 1958. He married in 1958 and had 2 children, when the marriage ended he started to travel for work and ply his pipefitting trade. He met his second wife in 1972 when working in Renfrew, Ontario when he decided to make it his home, he loved the small-town life. Later they returned to Toronto but decided city life didn’t suit them and they headed west landing in Fort St John, BC where Tom started working in sawmill construction, that led to traveling from job site to job site building and refitting mills across northern BC and Alberta. They returned to Ontario for a year then moved to Errington in 1979 where they married and had their daughter Vicki. Island life was very appealing and after another stint in Fort St John and Vancouver they returned to the Island and settled in Ladysmith in 1983. Tom continued to travel for work until his health issues forced him to retire.
Tom was a member of RCL Branch 171 and Aerie 2101 Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He will be deeply missed and never forgotten by those that loved him.
