George Stefan Kuprowsky Obituary Dr. Stefan Kuprowsky, ND of Gabriola Island has passed on following a long illness. He is survived by his beloved wife Natalya and sister Helena. He was a devoted son to his late mother, Anna Sorokin, a Ukrainian immigrant, who instilled in him his love and respect for nature that inspired his life choices as a naturopathic physician.
Stefan Kuprowsky had a career spanning forty years as a naturopathic doctor in BC, creating innovative clinics, treating a wide range of patients, teaching new generations of practitioners and serving on the boards of both the College of Naturopathic Physicians of BC and the BC Naturopathic Association. He served a term as President of the BCNA. He also served for many years as Chair of the Quality Assurance Committee of the College.
Stefan grew up in Ontario and earned two degrees in biological and medical anthropology in Ontario and BC. He earned his ND degree from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon.
He practiced in several locations in BC, including Vancouver, Whistler, Qualicum, Nanoose Bay, and Gabriola Island, over many years. He was also a consultant, writer, and lecturer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Kuprowsky served with multiple health authorities across BC, providing vaccinations.
Stefan developed and operated the Vancouver Naturopathic Clinic. For over 10 years he developed and operated residential healing retreats at EcoMed Natural Health Spa at Pacific Shores Nature Resort in Nanoose Bay. He later operated similar residential treatment programs at EcoMed Healing Spa on Gabriola Island.
In addition to his practice, he enjoyed teaching and for many years served as a professor at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in New Westminster, BC.
Stefan loved nature. His anthropology studies included the use of herbs and natural treatments across cultures. He was an avid hiker. He integrated nutrition, exercise, nature walks, psychotherapy and meditation into his treatment models for patients, with positive results. He studied many healing traditions and philosophies and integrated this learning into his practice.
In his younger days, he was an avid cyclist and took long distance cycling trips. He loved travelling and visited many countries. He loved art and music, attending many festivals, concerts and art exhibits. He was an avid photographer.
His life changed when he met his beloved wife, Natalya, on a European trip and she joined him in Canada as his wife. They worked and traveled together in BC and internationally. They enjoyed their country living on Gabriola Island, caring for their gardens, fruit trees and pets.
Dr. Stefan Kuprowsky, ND is survived by many friends, patients, colleagues and students who will miss him and remember him fondly. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine.
