Richard Walter Siegfried Haertel

Richard, was born in Germany on May 21, 1934.  He passed peacefully at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital surrounded by family and friends.  Richard is survived by his daughter Diana (David) Baker, his grandchildren Brandon (Sarah) Williamson and Taylor (Kayla) Williamson.  Also by survived by his son Bernd (Heather) Haertel and his grandchildren Patricia (Darren) Kools and Christopher (Mandy) Haertel.  Richard will be missed by his eight great grandchildren Benjamin, Kate, Sam, Alex, Klara, Nathan, Lydia, and Amelia.  Survived also by his sister Sybille in Germany.

Predeceased by his wife Waltraud, his brothers Joachim and Klaus. 

Richard moved to Nanaimo more than 20 years ago from Ontario to enjoy the beauty of the West coast.  He hunted, fished, made his wine and Grappa, and hiked, loving life.  Unfortunately he was stricken with cancer and he endured pain for far too many years.  He is in a better place.  Rest in peace Richard.
