August Johannes “Peter” Muller (January 12, 1938-May 2, 2026) passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Nanaimo, B.C. Peter fought valiantly for many months, eventually his strength gave out due to overwhelming illness and he was finally at peace.
Peter was born in Hamburg, Germany during a tumultuous time. His parents Otto and Catherina Muller raised Peter in Hamburg along with his two siblings Annette and Norbert. Peter spent summers working in Assel on his relative’s fruit farms.
Peter learned the trade of Plumber after he completed his schooling in Germany. He later moved to Canada with his fiancé Brunhild to start a new life of adventure far from home. Living in Alberta, for the first few years, Peter had to relearn his trade the Canadian way. He also had to learn to write and speak English. Peter and Brunhild married in 1959 and later, son Johannes (John) and daughter (Susanne) were born in Calgary. After a number of years, Peter decided to take his family back to Germany to make sure they had made the right decision. Peter and the family ultimately moved back to Canada, and started a new life in Victoria, B.C. A daughter, Jennifer was born in Victoria and Peter kept busy with his work. He built his first home in Saanich and later started his own company, ‘Peter Muller Plumbing and Heating’. Peter enjoyed working as a contractor, often working six days a week from morning until night. He continued to work well into his retirement years. In his off hours, Peter built houses for ‘Spec’, selling them once they were completed. Later, he built another home in Cordova Bay and the family moved again.
Peter had a lot of friends, most of whom were German and many were fellow contractors. Peter and Brunhild enjoyed an active social life; hosting and attending numerous dinners and parties. They joined the Edelweiss German Club in Victoria and were members of the German Choir for many years. Peter had a love for the sea, and after owning a sailboat for several years, he decided to build his own boat. He enjoyed taking his children and grandchildren out on the ocean on weekends.
In later years, Peter and Brunhild designed and built their retirement home in Ladysmith. They travelled extensively, taking numerous cruises, and visiting family in both Europe and the US.
Peter was known for his quick wit, his sarcastic nature, his enjoyment of Jazz music and his love of both German Shepherd and Cairn Terrier dogs. He enjoyed meeting up with work friends and colleagues for coffee, even after retirement. He admired a strong work ethic, those that worked with their hands and people that shared his interests. Peter loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren in later years.
Peter leaves his loving wife of 66 years, Brunhild; children John (Shawne), Susanne (Henryk), and Jennifer (Bruce). Peter leaves his grandchildren Christopher (Chantelle), Jasmine (Kevin), Tatiana (Ben) and Michael (Alexis), as well as Nathan (Vanessa), Daniel (Brooke), Jordan and Simon. He also leaves grandchildren Peter (Dana) and Alexander (Stephanie). Peter loved his great-grandchildren Isabella, Aubree and Klaus; Charles and Arthur; Madison, Bryson, and Abigail; Anastasia and Elias; Ivy and Flora; Barrett and Claire; as well as Dominic.
Peter leaves behind his sister Annette and his brother Norbert (Gerlinde) and predeceased by his parents Catherina and Otto Muller.
There will be no service or celebration of life, as requested by Peter.
A LIFE WELL LIVED
A life well lived, A life well travelled, A life well loved.
From war-ravaged lands, to new adventures, From hard won lessons to sons and daughters.
You lived and worked, You loved and nurtured, You spent your last years seeking kinship and peace.
Now rest, with no more pain and confusion, Now be with those you loved so long before, Now have peace and comfort, and know you made a difference, Now depart and we will remember and honour you, all the years ahead.
Susanne Niewiadomski, 2026.
