Norman Donald (Norm) Ross
Norm was born July 16, 1930 and passed away March 17, 2021 in Nanaimo BC with his family by his side. He was 90. In the days leading up to his death Norm let his family know that he was immensely proud of his life, his family and his accomplishments: what greater tribute to a life well lived. He had always feared “losing his marbles” but he kept this precious gift until the end.
Norm had an endless thirst for knowledge and was curious about everything that was happening in the world. His family members would often joke he was a walking encyclopedia. From a young age Norm’s athletic prowess and academic achievements were evident. He played multiple sports including skiing, hockey and he won the Richard Turner Trophy for Senior Track Championship and the Finnis Cup at Quebec High as the best all-round student – not bad for a kid who did Grades 1-9 in a one room school in northern Quebec!
Norm was the first person in his family to go to university and he was always a proud Queen’s University Mechanical Engineer (Class of ’52). Many fond memories and lifelong friendships were made, and this is where he met his wife Patricia (Trish) Ross nee Kitson. He financially supported and encouraged both his children and grandchildren to go on to higher education which they have all done.
Norm created a haven for his children and grandchildren through his tireless work at the beloved family cottage of Piers Island where he took many risks to build a pool, solar heating system and a dock and so much more which was enjoyed by family and friends alike. It was the gathering and bonding place for 3 generations of family. He leaves a legacy of family and education and a lifetime of memories, trips and adventures to remember him by.
He was predeceased by his wife Trish (2012), his son Ian (1967) and survived by his 3 children Cathy Manson(Scott), Bob (Alix) and Diane (Bill Johnston) and 5 grandchildren: Lael, Robert, Ian, Ross and James.
