Norene Agnes Battie
It is with very heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of our dear mother/nana/great-nana/sister/aunty, Norene Battie.
Norene was born March 10, 1935 in Nanaimo BC. She passed peacefully on January 28th, 2025 surrounded by her five children. She is survived by her children Kelly (Kyle), Joe (Jill), Pat (Kjerstin), Mike (Joani), John (Tannis), Mark McGonigle (Diane), her 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, brother Robin, sister Kerry (Chuck), and many extended family members. She was predeceased by her husband Ron, parents Peter and Agnes Gannon, sister Patricia.
Norene’s passions were her family, church and sports. She was a member of the Kinettes, the Catholic Women’s League and was actively involved in many community and church groups. Norene taught several generations in the 50s-70s to swim at Transfer beach. She was a PE teacher whose specialties were softball, basketball, tennis and dance. She and her husband Ron shared a passion for horseshoes.
Nana had a reputation for delivering one-liners, and her quick sense of humour stayed with her to the end. She instilled a great love of family in her words and her deeds. We, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will carry on her legacy of love, humour and support for each other through our lives.
We would like to thank all of the staff of La Rosa for their kindness to Mom in her last years. We would also like to thank the staff at Cowichan District Hospital Emergency for their support and kindness during Mom’s last day. We miss you, Mom.
A church service will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Ladysmith at 12:00 noon Saturday March 1st, 2025 with a reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Ladysmith Resource Centre Association.
