Neil NEWTON

It is with sadness that the family of John Neil Newton announce his passing on May 28, 2026, at the age of ninety-two. Neil is survived by his life partner of 43 years, Christina Dianne Hopkins and his two children Noelle Newton and Christopher Newton (Kelly Fitzherbert) along with his five grandchildren Amber, Jonathan, Devon, Natalie, and Brittany.

Neil was born in Montreal, Quebec, October 30, 1933, to Yvonne Marie Ladouceur and Thomas Wreyford Newton. Neil graduated from Lawrence Park Colligate in Toronto before heading off to St. Martins School of Art, London, England, from 1953-1955. In 1969 he received a Master of Photography Degree from Professional Photographers of America Inc.

Since 1957 Neil had worked in the corporate or education sector in the field of communications as either photographer, lecturer, advisor, producer or director including radio and TV guest appearances. He traveled extensively throughout Canada, USA, England, Mexico and Europe on assignments and exhibitions, responsible from the concept through all stages to the opening event.

In 1964 Neil moved from Toronto to a farm in Enniskillen, Ontario, with his young family. In 1971 he founded and directed the Photography Gallery in Bowmanville, Ontario, and in 1972 he closed his commercial studio in Toronto with the dream of visually recording the routines of daily life in an era that saw a rural life changing rapidly. In 1973 he began a program of teaching audio visual concepts and techniques to children in public school, under the guidance of the Ontario Arts Council, a unique program in Canada at the time.

Neil has numerous collections, for instance, the Tyrone Community Hall Board, Robert McLaughlin Gallery, National Gallery of Canada, and the National Film Board of Canada, to name a few.

In 1980 Neil was became an elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts.

Never afraid to take chances Neil and his partner Dianne moved to Chemainus, British Columbia, in 1988 after visiting Vancouver Expo in 1986.  In 1988 Neil ran with the Olympic Torch on Vancouver Island, his new home, passing the torch to the next participant, on it way to the Calgary Olympics. There he embraced a town, which was going through a revitalization, with murals. Together Neil and Dianne opened a studio and store front, Toad Hall Emporium. Continuing with his photography, his camera always on hand, and other mediums he embraced a new life immersing himself in the local events and community groups. You could find Neil carrying his ladder throughout town documenting the towns history in images or participating in Chemainus parades, sponsored by local community groups, suited as a clown.

People will remember Neil for his life achievements and engaging personality. Whether it is for his passion and creativity, his willingness to share his knowledge of photography mentoring those entering the profession, to his ongoing desire to continue learning.

His family will remember him as a loving and humble father, partner and gramps/grandpa Neil that always put others before himself. Dad loved animals and was known to bring home strays and in later years enjoyed walking the Hermits Trail with a furry companion. He was an inspiration that you should never give up, and you are never too old to stop learning. You will be forever in our hearts.
