Michael RANALLO Obituary

We are heartbroken to announce that Michael Joseph Ranallo passed away on June 23rd, 2019 at the age of 51 in Nanaimo, B.C. He had been living with stage 4 lung cancer for over 16 months.

Michael was born in Victoria, BC on 12th March 1968 to Joseph and Maureen (née Butler) Ranallo. When he was only 4 months old his family moved to Rossland, BC. In 1986, he graduated from Rossland Secondary School with many wonderful friends and memories. Michael earned several awards, including a Chancellor’s Entrance Scholarship to UBC and a Premier’s Excellence Award. Michael completed his Electrical Engineering Degree at UBC in 1991, having accumulated many more treasured friends and memories.

Mike worked at Canac/Microtel from June 1991-May 1992 as a software developer, working on the North Warning System. Onsite installation and testing allowed Michael to spend a few months near Tuktoyaktuk in the Northwest Territories. In 1992, Michael started working as a Software Engineer at Offshore Systems Ltd, and this changed the course of his life forever. His future wife, Lisa Ford, started working at Offshore in March 1993, and they were a couple by July of that year. They got married in Vancouver on 21st October 1995, and so began their crazy adventure. Over the years they lived in numerous places, and Mike worked at many different companies: Nortel (Calgary), Natural Microsystems (Massachusetts), Navitrak (Halifax), two more stints at Offshore, Lockheed Martin (Halifax), Zenefits (Vancouver) and finally USNR (Parksville). No matter where he worked, Michael thought of his co-workers not just as colleagues, but also as life-long friends.

Mike and Lisa were blessed with 3 children, whom he adored and treasured. His final wish was that they know how much he loved them. He will be remembered by everyone whose life he touched as a smart, friendly and funny man who could eat a lot of pizza. We love you infinity, Mike.

Michael is survived by his wife Lisa, son Jonathan, daughters Isabella and Gwynnevere, parents Joseph and Maureen, sister Laura (Jeff), father-in-law Ian, brother-in-law Charles (Shelley), nephews Thomas and Peter and niece Claire.

“Mike's memorial mass and celebration of life will be on July 20 (Sat.) at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Church.  A reception and social gathering will be held immediately afterwards.”

His entire family is extremely grateful for the care he received at NRGH Palliative Care Unit and Cancer Clinic and the BC Cancer Agency in Victoria. A special thanks to Dr. Kulla.
