Michael RAMSEY Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joyce (1933 – 2023) and Michael John (1934 – 2023) Ramsey in Nanaimo, BC. They leave behind and will be sorely missed by their loving children, Janet (Brian) Wright and Graham (Brenda) Ramsey, their grandchildren (Vanessa, Emily, Dana, Megan and Marcus), two great grandchildren (Spencer and Grayson) and Joyce’s sister, Hilary Hough.

Joyce and Michael were both born and raised in the north of England. They met at a dance where they instantly clicked and began dating. After Mike completed his national service, they got married and had their two children. Although she always claimed that she was not very adventurous, Joyce encouraged Mike to accept a job offer with General Foods and they moved to Cobourg, Ontario, Canada (sight unseen) in 1967.

Though Joyce was small in stature, she was full of energy, drive and determination. From administrative roles, she worked her way to AVP, Human Resources at Lloyds Bank. She was always recognized for her dedication and professionalism and was well-liked by her colleagues. Most of her bosses came to see her as indispensable.

Once retired, she developed a passion for golfing and devoted significant time to volunteer activities. She was awarded the Order of Niagara for her service to the Anglican Church in St. Catharines and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal for her work with the Literacy Council of Niagara.

Michael was quiet and reserved with a sharp mind and a dry, very funny, sense of humour.  He began his career as a chemist and emigrated to Canada to work in packaging technology (focussed on how to package food products so they can be shipped across the country, maintaining freshness and arriving intact) for General Foods, later for Kellogg Salada and then in his own consultancy. He was recognized for his steady and loyal service and expertise in his field.

As a young man, Michael did a lot of long-distance cycling, something he picked up again later in life (albeit for shorter distances) along with a passion for golf, which he and Joyce played together regularly. In his late 60”s, he developed a strong interest in computer technology and his tenacious problem-solving led to many hours in front of his computer (to Joyce’s frustration at times).

For 65 years, Joyce and Michael had a close and happy marriage and did most things together. In the end, they were separated for only 8 days. Their family takes comfort in the thought that they are together again.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the nurses, doctors and staff at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital who, despite funding and staffing challenges, were consistently professional, kind and compassionate with Joyce, Mike and all the family. Thank you to Reverend Susan for her comfort during this difficult time. Thank you to all the family and friends who offered their condolences and support, your kind words have been a comfort to us all.
