With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Mead in Glengarry Hospital in Victoria after living in Eden Gardens in Nanaimo for four years with the challenge of dementia. Mead was born in Ottawa, Ont, relocating with family to Saanich in 1939. Educated and resided in Saanich.
In his youth he worked in the rose nursery of Mr. Layritz, Mr. Spect, and Ed Lobrunner, also his Dad's nursery on Quada Street. Later he was employed with Victoria Machinery Depot, Butchart Gardens and served 35 years of community service with the District of Saanich.
Mead had a passion for fishing, hunting with his Dad, swimming, waterskiing, snowskiing, curling, hiking the Westcoast Trail, and Great wall of China. Mead had great pleasure travelling in the motorhome with co-pilot, Norreen, across Canada and the United States wintering in El Centro Calif. Palm Spring area, and southern Arizona. Train travel was a favorite, up Island, across Canada, United States, Perth Australia to Adelaide on the Indian Pacific, then on to Alice Springs on the Ghan, England and Scotland. He visited many European countries, Hong Kong, Beijing China, Hawaii and had many cruises.
Our Grandfather, Gramps, retired when we were young. The greatest gift he gave us were the best years of his retirement, spending countless hours with his three grandchildren. He shared his passion for camping and fishing with trips to Quennel Lake in Yellowpoint and to the "lot" in Parksville where he passed on his love of outdoors and respect for nature.
Mead is lovingly survived by Norreen, devoted wife and soulmate, married 67 years, cherished daughter, Colleen (Brad), grandchildren Kris (Brittany), Kyle (Myka), Hayley (Sean), great grandson, Rafael. Predeceased by parents George and Elsie, sister Trudi, brother-in-law Bob, sister Brenda .
Special thanks to staff on Cypress at Eden Gardens Nanaimo BC for their devotion and kindness and dedicated staff at Glengarry Hospital Victoria BC. A family gathering will be held in June.
