Lorne FREED Obituary

LORNE FREED (1936 – 2022)

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Lorne Freed.  High school sweetheart and loving husband of 60 years to Phyllis.  The best father to Cori (Tony), Elisa (Tim) and Cheri (Rob).  The best joke teller to his grandchildren Davis, Rachel, Sam, Matthew, and Julia.  Oldest brother to Howard (Joyce) and Alan (Sharon).   Treasured uncle and brother-in-law to many.

Lorne was born in Ottawa and grew up in Kingston, where he met his beloved Phyllis Miles.  After studying in NYC and helping to create television in Scotland, Lorne went on to a 50-year career in broadcasting.  He was a director, producer, and executive.  He worked on many of Canada’s first TV programs including the Pierre Burton Show and helping to create the Pig and Whistle.

Dad was dignified, creative and kind, and always our champion.  He taught his daughters how they should be treated and was an original girl-dad.  We knew as young girls that we could do and be anything we wanted.  He gave us the best childhood any could could ask for.  He gave us endless gifts, vacations to New England, boat rides, fishing trips, horseback riding lessons, outings to the hardware store, purple suede outfits, driving lessons, sitting with him and watching war movies, love of the Blue Jays and sports, cheering for the underdog, DQ cones, his great cooking, our educations, and the love of music. But his greatest gift of love and laughter will live on in his family forever.  We will never forget you.  We love you.  Go rest high on that mountain.

A private service will be held in the spring.  In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Nanaimo Regional Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
