It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Patrick Redfern with his loving family by his side.
John was born on December 28, 1935 in , England, and older brother to Norma.
John and his family moved to Canada in 1952.
John met his sweetheart, Bette, in 1953 at Esquimalt United Church while she was singing in the church choir. They married at the same church February 18, 1956. They relocated to Vancouver for a short time starting their family.
John and Bette returned to Esquimalt with their young children Dawn and Michael in 1963. In 1969 they fostered a child Chris at the age of 2.
For many years John worked for the Provincial Government in 1953 and retired in 1996. Then moved to Nanaimo in 1996, which gave them more time to enjoy their grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. John and Bette went on an extraordinary 6-week trip to the UK in 1996 to learn and explore their family roots.
John was a charismatic, funny and caring man who loved his family and his family sure loved him. John had the best sense of humour and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren more then they will ever know.
To us, even at the age of 86, we feel he was gone to soon and those that knew him would agree.
John is predeceased by his wife, Bette and their son Michael, survived by daughter Dawn of Nanaimo and son Chris of Victoria, sister Norma (Tom) of Victoria, former son-in-law Bill of Nanaimo, grandchildren Jennifer, Kyle (Dawn), Brianna and great-grandchildren Nathan, Olivia, Brooklyn and Acacia.
John will also be tremendously missed by Bette's family and extended family as they were all very close throughout the years.
The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses of the Cardiology unit at Royal Jubilee Hospital for being so attentive and caring during the very difficult but short time he was there.
There will be no service as per request of John. A small family celebration of life may be held at a later date.
