Janis Maura Helen Harper
May 25, 1960 - June 15, 2026
Janis Harper passed away peacefully the morning of June 15, 2026 at the age of 66.
Janis possessed many talents, particularly in the arts, the consummate Renaissance woman. She was a widely published writer, singer-songwriter, stage actor, adjunct English professor, expressive arts therapist, and much more. Most importantly, she was a loving and caring mother, sister, and friend to many. She prioritized relationships and could connect with a broad spectrum of personalities given her adaptable nature. Janis was also highly spiritual, describing herself as a mystic with a philosophical bent. She loved India, and travelled there multiple times. Despite passing too soon, Janis lived an extremely fulfilling life.
Janis is survived by her son Adam, daughter-in-law Marie and their young children Emma and Oliver, as well as by Janis's sister (and neighbour) Lyn, who steadfastly provided invaluable care and support for Janis in her final months. Adam and Janis had an especially close mother-son bond, as did many of Adam's friends who viewed Janis as a second mother.
Her final months were filled with peaceful reflection, often in the presence of friends and family who were afforded the opportunity to bid farewell in person. We also express gratitude to the many healthcare professionals who ensured she was comfortable and cared for throughout.
A memorial will be planned in Nanaimo and in Vancouver sometime later this year. Her ashes will be scattered off Locarno Beach, Vancouver.
Comfortable with the idea of death and dimensions beyond, Janis is now exploring that world in the same way she curiously explored ours.
This too shall pass
