Hanne KARJALUOTO Obituary

Hanne was born in Copenhagen on December 28 1943. She was a child of fairy tale forbidden love and was given up for adoption as an infant. Gunner and Gudrun eeg adopted Hanne and raised like she was their own along with her sister Ingrid. When Hanne was a young girl she started horseback riding and her love horses remained with her all her life. When it was time to make a career choice Hanne chose hairdressing. She married her first husband Niels in January of 1965 and two years later they decided to start the grand adventure of moving to Canada. They landed in Prince Albert Saskatchewan and quickly moved to Vancouver in 1967. In 1970 while living in Richmond she gave birth to her son Martin. After a 2 year stint in Tahsis she returned to the lower mainland where she lived until 1980. During that time she was divorced and met her second husband Cecil. In 1980 they moved to Salmon arm. In 1985 she found herself to be a single woman again but soon she met her third husband Arvo who she was with until he passed away in 1998. Hanne decided not to get married again. In 2007 Hanne decided to move to Vancouver Island to be close to her two Granddaughters and son.

Hanne’s love for animals started at a young age. Growing up in Copenhagen she couldn’t live on a farm but she took horseback riding lessons for many years. In 1974 while living in Surrey she was able to get a horse of her own, the first of many. After moving to Salmon Arm her few horses turned into many horses and at one time there were 2 dozen horses on the farm. Eventually Hanne down sized the herd to just a couple of horses and when she moved to Vancouver Island she had to sell her horses.    She also had a love for dogs… Starting with salukis. Hanne bred showed and loved numerous other breeds of dogs including Borzoi, English cocker spaniels, springer spaniels, German shepherds, corgis, and finally poodles. Sometime in the early 70s Hanne decided that she would rather cut dogs hair than human hair and she somehow managed to find time to run a farm and groom upwards of 30 dogs a week. Of course having horses and dogs there had to be cats never more than 1 or 2 but always cats.

Hanne worked very hard so that when she had the chance to she could play hard as well. She enjoyed horseback riding, hanging out with friends, traveling and dancing. She would try to go home to Denmark every few years and take as many trips to warmer climates as she could. Later in life dancing became her passion and the last time she danced was New Year’s Eve 2018 three days after she was diagnosed with cancer.
