It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gwen Katherine Jahelka (Shank). She passed away, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her family on April 11, 2025.
Gwen was born to Ambrose and Irene Shank (predeceased) on December 4, 1966, in Athabasca, Alberta. She grew up on the family farm just outside of town, where she developed a strong work ethic, a deep appreciation for nature, and the values that guided her throughout her entire life. Gwen is survived by her loving husband, William Jahelka, and three beautiful children, Maris (Justin), Hilary (Lyndon), and Carly (Meg). She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Gwen will be dearly missed by the many others whose lives she so deeply touched.
Her life was devoted to serving Jesus. She lived her faith with humility, grace, and purpose—in her roles as a teacher, chaplain, and most recently, as the Chancellor of the Diocese of Victoria. Gwen’s commitment to the Church was a guiding light throughout her life, and her faith was the foundation of everything she did.
Gwen also cherished time spent with her family and friends. Whether it was sharing meals, meaningful conversations, or quiet moments together, she believed that the greatest gift was simply being present with those she loved. As she would always say, “it is all about the love,” and did she ever exude that. She had a deep love for travel and delighted in exploring new places, often combining her adventures with opportunities for connection, reflection, and growth.
Gwen’s light will continue to shine in the lives she loved so well. She will be forever missed and lovingly remembered.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 21, 2025 at 10:30 AM at St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Victoria, B.C. There will be a reception at St. Andrew’s High School to follow. All who wish to attend are welcome, please wear something that reminds you of Gwen. For those who cannot attend in person the funeral will be live-streamed here. https://youtube.com/live/bxNiqiQIVC0
