Doug will be remembered by his loving wife of almost 48 years, Leeanna; their three children, Teresa (Engel), Dan, and Sarah (Nick); and four grandchildren, whom he adored.
Born to Stan and Jean Byer in Fort Simpson, NWT, Doug’s childhood included many moves across the country before his family settled in Edmonton, AB. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta and married Leeanna shortly after in 1977.
Doug was a man of many passions who enjoyed fishing, golfing, songwriting, and coaching his children’s softball teams. He was also a writer, having authored a biography about his father’s adventures as an RCMP officer in the Arctic, and he also co-wrote a one-man play about Babe Ruth that was performed in the Edmonton and New York International Fringe Festivals.
Many life-long friendships were struck during Doug’s 20-year career with the City of Edmonton, but he eventually tired of the harsh Alberta winters. He and Leeanna followed their best friends to Vancouver Island in 2011. They spent years enjoying fishing, hiking, watching sunsets at the beach with their dog, Peanut, and exploring the island together.
Doug truly cherished his time as a grandfather. When he wasn’t cheering on the Oilers and Blue Jays, he was happily playing cards and computer games with his grandkids.
