David Robert HOPE

David Robert Hope of Ladysmith, B.C. died unexpectedly on May 17th, 2023 at the age of 59. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Jane; his children Bethani, Dawson, Shelby and Taelyr Mcleod; brother (in Scotland) Ian Hope; niece Amanda Nielson (Al) and their children—his beloved littles, Mathias and Jedda; and sister-in-law Monica Hogg. All of whom he loved wholeheartedly.

Born June 21st, 1963 in Selkirk, Scotland, David was forever immensely proud of his heritage. He never lost his distinctive accent or his love of all things Scottish. In 1996 David was Selkirk Royal Burgh Standard Bearer—a tradition carried on since the 1500’s. It was the proudest day of his life and where he met Jane who was visiting family from Canada. After a fairy tale romance they married and moved to Canada, settling eventually on Vancouver Island.

David worked as an education assistant at Ladysmith Secondary School where he kept everyone laughing and engaged.  He volunteered with rescued parrots at Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary and then with parrots at the Raptor Centre in Duncan. He will be sorely missed by his own parrots, Pretty Bird, Jake and Ezzy, as well as his devoted dogs, Flynn, Angel and Molly. 

David loved celebrating Halloween and was well-known for converting his entire front yard into a spooky, place of gravestones and dismembered bodies, spiders and monsters. Together with Jane, he delighted in dressing up in scary costumes to hand out treats to all the kids.

David embraced life and cherished his family and friends. We hope he is sitting in that forever campground in the sky watching over all of us.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m.on Saturday, June 24th at the Saltair Community Centre, 3850 South Oyster School Road, Ladysmith (Saltair)
