Vanderzon, Asta Marjatta passed away peacefully at her daughter’s Nature Sanctuary on May 19, 2025 on Vancouver Island, surrounded by loved ones and nature. Dear mother of Helena van der Zon (son-in-law Adam Skulsky), Marcus van der Zon, Bernell and Marian van der Zon (son-in-law Darren McKinnon)(all of Vancouver Island, BC). Grandmother to Alexander Witvoet (Port Coquitlam, BC). Asta is survived by her sister, Helena Molder in Helsinki, Finland. Asta was predeceased by her parents, Ester Mölder (nee Valkama; born Helsinki, Finland), Karl Mölder (born Tartu, Estonia) and sister Anja Rajalin (Stockholm, Sweden). Asta was deeply spiritual and impactful in many people’s lives, offering wisdom and support. She had 44 years of sobriety and was active in the community. She will be lovingly remembered for her sense of humour, enthusiasm for life, adventurous spirit, love of nature and horticulture, especially trees & flowers, and support to many. She will be loved and missed by her children, family and community.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Asta on her Facebook page, which will be memorialized in her honour. A private Celebration of Life will be held in the next few weeks, and a Birch tree planted, at Asta’s request.
