Eleni (Helen) DOUKAKIS

Dear friends, it is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our mother, Eleni (Helen) Doukakis.

Eleni was born on March 25, 1939 in Hania, Crete, Greece. Her father was lost during WWII and her mother many years later in Canada. She was the third born of five children and moved to Athens in 1946 to live with her Uncle and Grandparents.  In 1954 Eleni met her husband Christos in Athens (who was a Lieutenant in the army) and were married that summer. The following year, their first son, Spyridon was born Piraeus, Greece. They moved to Quebec, Canada in 1958. They had three more children in Montreal, Ioanna, Petros and Nectarios, before moving to BC in the 1967 and settling in Burnaby and Port Coquitlam. Eleni chose to raise a family and be active in her community rather than work.  She loved to dance and was amongst the last ones of the dance floor at the end of every celebration.

In 2004 Christos and Eleni moved to Vancouver Island to be close to their Grandchildren.  In October of 2006, Christos passed away. Helen leaves behind her two sisters, ----- in Edmonton and Montreal - daughter Ioanna; sons Spyros, Petros, and Nectarios - grandchildren Christos, Sunoma, Geordon, Christos, Daniel and James - and family in Greece, Montreal, Edmonton, Sunshine Coast and Vancouver. She will be remembered for her amazing flower arrangements, interior designing and most importantly, for the care she gave to her family.  She took great pride in her home and always created a warm, loving and nurturing environment for her children and grandchildren.

The family would like to thank all those who cared for Helen at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital Renal Unit, these past few years, and the staff at the palliative care unit for all their support in her final days.  You all made her days more comfortable and fulfilling with the attention and affection you shared… and for this we are forever grateful.

Prayer services, led by Father George Tolias (Victoria Greek Orthodox community), will be held at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church (1135 4th Avenue, Ladysmith) Sunday evening, December 2nd at 5:30. Funeral service held on Monday, December 3rd at 11:30am in Ladysmith. A reception at the Ladysmith Catholic Church will follow the funeral services.
